We investigate supersonic collisions of two Bose-Einstein condensates as a potential source of entangled atomic pairs by analyzing the reduction of the number difference fluctuations between regions of opposite momenta. We show that due to the non-monochromaticity of the mother clouds, a high pair-production rate is disadvantageous for number squeezing. In the presence of many competing modes, smaller cloud densities are preferable. Using a simple model, we explain the relationship between density correlations and the number squeezing, and argue that the multi-mode nature of the scattering must be taken into account to explain the properties of the halo of scattered atoms. We also analyze the impact of the Bose enhancement on the number squeezing, by introducing a simplified low-gain model.
